SubTerrain Magazine, 1984 Issue
Overview
SubTerrain Magazine dedicated its 84th issue to George Orwell’s 1984. I was invited to create a series of visual pieces inspired by the novel, which were featured throughout the magazine.
This project focused on developing artwork that could support the themes of the issue while working effectively within an editorial layout.
Role
Illustrator, concept development, editorial artwork series
Deliverables
Illustration series for magazine issue
Final artwork for print production
Key design decisions
-
The illustrations were developed as a set, creating a consistent visual voice across the issue.
-
The work was designed to reflect the themes of 1984 without simply illustrating scenes, leaving room for interpretation.
-
Each piece focused on tension, control, and psychological weight, matching the mood of the novel and the issue theme.
-
The artwork was designed with print limitations in mind, ensuring it reproduced cleanly and consistently throughout the issue.
Outcome
A series of editorial illustrations that strengthened the thematic identity of the issue and added visual impact throughout the magazine.
